Mary Elizabeth Ferrell OBIT.jpg

Mary Elizabeth Ferrell was a long time member of the Mingo and Logan County (WV) Genealogical Societies, and wrote many of their articles on my Ferrell line. She was looking to write a book, but I can't tell that she did. Michael Dye is a related Ferrell/Thompson researcher active on in the early oughts/2000's on the Ancestry message boards.

In Logan County Society with Dana Dorsey, Samuel W. Rogers, Sigfus Olafson, Fred C. Thomson Jr., who was related to Connie Chancellor who is a research friend of mine in Georgia (circa 2022-2023).

NOTE: 1 - Try to find her in Ancestry.com, and see if she has living relatives that might still have her research. I first see her in Vol 9-14 (page 13 of Vol. 9, No. 3 of Logan County Ancestree Newsletter, Fall 1986) looking for the below. How old would Mary have been then? 60s? If so, born about 1920ish, so could be in 1920-50 census. Was she born in AZ, or did she retire there?

NOTE: 2 - I think this might be her on Find a Grave. Details b: 28 Oct 1928, Chattaroy, Mingo County, West Virginia, USA, d. 19 Apr 2011 (aged 82), Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA, burial

NOTE: 3 - She was in DAR - Thorugh whom did she qualify?

NOTE: 4 - I found her brother living in Tucson, and he has her research! I've been working to get ahold of them, and will start posting them here, in the MEF Archive.

A railroad crossing is directly across Route 65 from the double gate. The graves are at the back of an open field.) An Ancestry, it appears she died in Tuscon.

Mary Elizabeth Ferrell culminated her career with the U.S. Public Health Service as Director of Indian Health Services, from 1952 to 1980 in Tucson, AZ. She received her Master's of Science degree in nutrition, from Case Western Reserve University, was a Genealogy Expert of the Commonwealth of Virginia and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution from October 7, 2000 until her death.

George Washington Duty, 1800-1897
Researching A Family History
George Washington Duty first appeared in the Tug River Valley on the 1830 Census of Logan County, Virginia. He purchased land according to the Logan County Land Tax records about a decade later. He came to Logan County from Russell, Co., Va. His Parents were Martha (Patsy) Roman and Thomas Duty. He was born about 1800. A birthl date is given in some sources as 9 March 1800. All research indicates he was born in Russell Co., Va.
The last record in Russell County that I have found to date for him is when he in 1819 in court chose William Lockhart as his guardian. He was evidently under 21 years of age at that time. George Washington Duty, according to the data I have collected, married Mary Ann Jackson about 1826, probably in Russell Co. Marriage records for this period are lost for Russell County.
Mary Ann Jackson was born about 1811 and was probably age 15 when she married. A search of the records has led me to believe she is the daughter of Richard and Marian Lockhart Jackson of Russell County.
The 1830 Census of Logan County for George Duty lists him as age 30-40, one female age 15-20, one male under 5 years of age and one female under 5 years of age. This indicates to me that the tuo oldest children vere born in Russell County and refutes tho sources that other children were born in Russell County.
An analysis of census records and land records indicate that George W. Duty was primarily a farmer who owned land on Lick Branch of Pigcon Creek. The land was possibly located in the area of the presont day toun of Delbarton. In fact, the toun of Delbarton may even be located partly on the cite of land once owned by G.W. Duty.
George W. Duty died about 1897. One date has been given as 23 January 1897. Mary Ann Duty died about 1889. Neither appeared on the 1900 census of Mingo County or Logan County, W. Va.
I have tracked the children of George and Mary Ann Duty via census and records through 1910. The known children are: ELLISON CARROLL, born 2 July,1827, died 18 Dec. 1902, married Harriet McCoy, daughter of Daniel and Margaret Taylor McCoy. He lived all his life in Logan County.
MARTHA JANE, born 10 Feb. 1829, died 4 August 1906. This is my great grandmother who married Evans Ferrell 27 Feb. 1845. Evans was the son of Richard and Rebecca Romaine Ferrell. He inherited land (also receieved land via patent) from his father on Pigeon Creek, Logan Co. now Mingo County. Evans died 31 March 1896 at Evans Ferrell Branch, Pigeon Creek.
JOHN M., born about 1833, possibly married Mary Murphy, died about 1854. Mary Duty, widow, married John Buchanan 2 Apr. 1856, had a son John M. Duty.
WILLIAM R., born 26 Aug. 1838, died 23 June 1910 He married Emma Ferrell, daughter of James and Elizabeth Fields Ferrell. They were living in Lincoln Co. W.V. in 1880 and in 1900.
MARY ANN, born 13 April 1840, died ? , married Charles Alexander Crockett, 6 May 1880, Logan Co. W.V. Nothing else is known about her. She is often confused with sister-in-law Mary Ann Chaffin Duty.
GEORGE W. Jr., born 1841, married Sarah Hatfield, Pike Co. Ky., 19 March 1868. Sarah was the daughter of Ephriam and Phoebe Vance Hatfield. George Jr. lived in Pike Co., Ky. from 1880 until he died in 1917.
JAMES, born about 1842, possibly died in Civil War. He may have been in the 22nd Virginia Calvary, but have not checked this.
LEMUEL, born about 1845, died ? , married Sarah McCoy 22 Nov. 1866, Pike Co., Ky. Sarah may have been Sarah Levisa, nickname Vicy. I do not know who her parents were. She was not,to my knowledge, the daughter of my great great grandfather Daniel McCoy. I have been unable to track Lemuel after his marriage.
CHARLES ALEXANDER, born about 1848, died 2 Feb. 1886, Boone, Co.,W.Va. He married Mary Ann Chaffin 27 Aug. 1874, Logan, Co. W.V. They divorced by 1880 when he and 2 of his children were on the 1880 census with his father. Mary Ann was in Lincoln Co. W.V. on 1900 census with her three children.
CAROLINE MATILDA, born about 1852 died about 1877, married Moses Maynard about 1870. Moses married the second time to Sarah Rutherford on 12 Dec. 1878, Logan Co. W.V.
WINFIELD SCOTT, born about 1859, probably died by 1880.
The birth and death dates listed in the above came from a variety of sources. I listed the date after an analysis of census and marriage records. The names of parents of spouses are from marriage records, decendants and research of the family groups of McCoy, Ferrell and Roman.
