Logan County WV

Many of my people from from Logan County on my dad's side, but like many places in this time period, as populations grew the borders kept getting redrawn and subdivided to keep political jurisdictions manageable. One useful site for looking at this is the Newbury Library's Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.

Note that, in 1895, the portion of Logan that my people lived in up against the border of Kentucky (along the Tug River) is ceded to the new Mingo County.

  • Logan was part of Fincastle from 1738 to 1776
  • Then a part of Montgomery until 1790
  • a part of Wythe until 1792
  • a part of Kanawha until 1809
  • when it became a part of Cabell (1809)
  • and remained as such until it was organized into a county in 1823
