Logan Banner Thursday, Mar 07, 1889[1]
Great grandpa Moses is reasonably well documented. He was born July 1 1874 in Logan County, WV to Elijah "Lige" Ferrell and Augusta Ellis, and was a County Court Commissioner since at least 1889.

Moses was apparently quite civically-minded, as he was also appointed Post Master in 1912, and helped obtain funding to build the Menifee County Court House. Refer to the Logan County page for more details, but in brief Logan was split in 1895, with the southwestern portion becoming the new county of Mingo in 1895. We can see from the 1880 Census that Moses was living in the Logan township of Trdelphia, and the Logan Banner articles show he was County Commissioner in 1889-1891.

The 1890 Census was lost to fire, and I cannot find him in 1900. By 1910 we see that Moses has moved to Frenchburg, Menifee County, KY. It appears he ran again for County Commissioner in 1892, but I can't see that he won or lost. There was also an 1891 Chancery Case that he was required to settle by the sale of real estate. Maybe this was why he decided to move to Kentucky, but I can't say for sure. Interestingly his World War I draft card shows his birthday as 19 Jun 1873, his death certificate says 19 Jun 1874, but the Logan birth register says July 1. I suspect July 1 was the date it was reported to the county, and June 19th was the actual date, and the register had the correct year and there was a simple mistake made on the draft card (maybe you needed to be 45 or younger to register?).

The more interesting question is why so many documents, including his obituaries show his middle initial as 'S'? All of his other documents (draft card, the court house plaque, this Post Master nomination, death certificate, census records, and his gravestone) say "F"... with no indication what it stood for!
